I took both the Sea Eagle 124 SMB and the Sevylor Fish Hunter
to a local lake and did a side by side comparison. I set them both up, took them on the lake, rowed around, stood up, and broke them down. Below is my review of the two boats.
Both boats are really great if you want to get out on some local lakes and do a little fishing. Either way it is a very inexpensive way to have a great time. And it is way better than warrior fishing standing elbow to elbow with all of the other people standing on the dock or shoreline.
I enjoyed both boats. I borrowed my friends Sevylor Fish Hunter which is rated for up to 6 people or 1,200 pounds. It felt to me like the Sea Eagle 124 SMB was the bigger boat and enjoyed a little more stability but the Sea Eagle 124SMB is only rated for 4 people. I’ve had 4 people in my Sea Eagle and it is comfortable if those 4 people are 2 adults and 2 kids but it would be pretty tight with 4 adults for any length of time. Six people in the Sevylor seems like a stretch to me. I’m sure you could fit 6 adults in the boat but I wouldn’t want to be one of them.
It took me about 16 minutes to set up the Sea Eagle from start to finish. It took me about 18 minutes to set up the Sevylor from start to finish. This was a bit of a surprise really. The Sea Eagle has wood floors, a motor mount, trolling motor and a battery. This was my first time actually running a timer so I was happy to see I could set it up in just 16 minutes. It took me a little longer to set up the Sevylor. This is probably because I had never set the Sevylor up before where with the Sea Eagle I do it all the time. I ran into some issues with the Sevylor in that my electric pump didn’t seem to have the right nozzle for two of the Sevylor chambers so I had to break out my hand pump.
The one area I feel like the Sevylor was better equipped was with the rowing oar holders. That is a clever design and makes rowing the boat pretty easy.
On the other hand when I purchased the Sea Eagle 124 SMB I purchased the Fisherman’s Dream Package and in my opinion it really is a dream. Having the hard floors makes it so nice to have a stable fishing platform and gives me the confidence to be able to stand up and stretch my legs and back.
After rowing boats I’ve really come to love the little MinnKota Endura 30 I purchased. It makes it quick and easy to get to where I want to go. I did a speed test today and going into the wind with my Minkota 30 Endura I was able to go 3 miles per hour.
This was my first time setting up the Sevylor and it took me 18 minutes. It probably took me a little longer because this was my first time. I set up the Sea Eagle 124SMB with the floor boars, motor mount, motor and battery and it only took me 16 minutes to set up. Probably because I set it up a lot and I have a system down for getting it set up fairly quick.
I tried standing up in the Sevylor and I wouldn’t recommend that. I tried standing up in my Sea Eagle with the wood floors and you could do that all day long. It’s probably not the safest thing but it is a stable flat bottom with solid wood floors that create a very stable sturdy platform.
The Sevylor feels a little lighter to me than the Sea Eagle but I did not actually put them on a scale just picked them up next to one another.
The fishing rod holder seemed a little more stout on the Sea Eagle than it did on the Sevylor.
I also deflated both boats. At the end of the day when the kids are getting fidgety after a long day fishing you just want to pack up and go. It took me about 6.5 minutes to break down the Sevylor and it took me about 10 minutes to break down the Sea Eagle.
I take my wife and two kids (ages 5 & 8) fishing all the time in my Sea Eagle and we are comfortable. When I bring my wife I like to bring a folding chair for the front of the boat. With the solid wood floors it provides for a super comfortable chair for her to sit in. The kids usually just sit on the floor or next to me on the aluminum seat. We’ve had a great time fishing the past couple of years.
My buddy who let me borrow his Sevylor Fish Hunter lives on a small lake here in WA. He and his son take it out fishing all the time and they have a great time. The Sevylor does not have as many bells and whistles as the Sea Eagle but I know my buddy has a great time fishing the lakes with his son. At the end of the day that’s what it’s really all about. It doesn’t matter how fancy the inflatable boat is as long as it gets the job done.
